HOW TO KEEP YOUR ACTIVE DOG COOL ON A HOT SUMMER DAY

It’s starting to fee a lot like summer!

Here’s a list of 10 ways to keep your active dog cool during the hot summer days.

1- Stay indoors/AC

If you have AC it’s a good idea to turn it on and chill indoors during the hottest, most humid midday hours.

2- Use cooling toys, bands and/or mats

Many dog product manufacturers offer cooling products for dogs. Can be used indoors in combination with a cooling fan if you don’t have AC or outdoors chilling in the yard. These from GF PET are adorable. (click on the arrows to view more images)

3- Go for a swim

If you have a pool or if there is water nearby, there is nothing like a good swing or a nice game of fetch in the water to cool down and use up some of that energy.

4- Play with water toys/ fountains

Your pups gets refreshed while having a blast and you get hours of free entertainment watching him go! Even your backyard hose can be the source of endless entertainment. (click on the arrows to view more images)

5- Keep him hydrated

When it’s super hot out make sure he always has water nearby to drink. Like us, dogs get dehydrated faster when it’s hot.

6- Stay in the shade

Sitting under a tree is way better that in the full sun.

7- Exercise in the morning (or after sunset)

If you have a super active dog that needs his exercise everyday, try and go out early in the morning before it gets too humid. Nigh time is usually cooler too.

8- Get out of the city 

The city with all it concrete does get warmer than nature parks. Try and make it out of the city to freshen up

9- Stay off the sidewalk/pavement

Sidewalks get super hot super fast. If you’re walking around in the city try and let your dog walk on some grass (or dirt) as much as possible. It’ll be way more comfortable for his little paws.

10- Enjoy some frozen treats

There are so many easy recipes if you google frozen dog treats or pupsicles on the internet. It’ll keep him occupied and cool. + you’ll get some amazing photos.

If your dog has an instagram account most of those tips can serve as inspiration for an impromptu photo session. : )

The most important thing to remember is to never leave your dog in a hot car. Even a couple of minutes can do permanent damage.
